About Me
I have four years’ experience as a Buyer in the Retail industry and my main areas of interests are Product Development and Marketing. I work on various proprietary products for my portfolio which allows me to express my creative side in the development process. After migrating to Canada in 2014, I completed a post-graduate certificate in Project Management, and I realized during this time that this would complement my love for Product Development. I gained knowledge and skills, particularly in scheduling, monitoring and controlling which has been a great help in the growth of my career so far.
Current Occupation
Associate Category Manager at Indigo Books & Music Inc.
Experience & Education
I have experience in co-leading end-to-end product development initiatives as well as leading various optimization projects in the retail space. I have a bachelor’s degree in Management Studies with a focus in Marketing from the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica. I have a post-graduate certificate in Project Management from Centennial College and completed a professional development certificate in Digital Marketing from Brainstation. I recently completed my CAPM this year.
PMI Member since: October 2018
Why did I join PMI Toronto Chapter?
I joined the PMI Toronto Chapter to expand my professional network in the Project Management industry and keep abreast of emerging concepts and practices in this field. I thought it was very important for me to be a part of this community as a young professional, even though my job title doesn’t say “Project Manager”. This community has enabled me to get connected with like-minded professionals from various industries, to share insights and learn from each other through avenues not normally accessible.
Why did I do the PMP/CAPM Certification?
I took the first step by enrolling in the PMI Toronto Chapter’s Career Development Mentoring Program. I was paired with an exceptional mentor who helped me to craft a clear career path where I saw I needed to take the next step and get certified. Getting the CAPM was the first empowering step in my Project Management career and I know this will help me to gain the necessary hours toward the ultimate PMP certification.
Greatest learning from PMP/CAPM
My biggest take-away from the CAPM was the importance of understanding the concepts and taking the time to apply these to your real work life. It made a world of a difference for me whilst studying for the exam. Applying the principles and concepts to my work life really helped to cement them, so that when I saw the questions, I was able to reason and apply the concepts. More importantly, the knowledge gained has helped me immensely in my current role. It has given me more confidence in my day-to-day responsibilities and has allowed me to improve on areas that were challenging.
