CAMH Professionals Looking to Certify

Guest Author
By Gabriel M-Sirois On Thursday October 15 2015 project managers from CAMH (centre for Addiction and Mental Health) attended a PMI-SOC presentation on the benefits of PMI-SOC membership and PMP certification. The EPMO (Enterprise Project Management Office) Senior Manager Jacqueline Phan and Project Coordinator David Yin were the principal contacts who invited the Healthcare branch PMI-SOC team. Farrah Riyahi, Chair for PMI – Southern Ontario – Healthcare Branch Chair and Azim Khot, Public Relations Office – PMI – Southern Ontario – Healthcare Branch  prepared and presented and made the EPMO event possible. The turnout was excellent. Over a dozen project professionals attended, and following the presentations questions continued to come as attendees requested further information on PMI registered providers and the process to follow. The level of engagement, participation, and many questions around the technical requirements and advantages of a PMP certification demonstrates once again that information on project management as a profession is in high demand.. Azim and Farrah were asked to provide more information on healthcare specific statistics and case studies, however industry specific information is beyond the scope of an introductory presentation, the discussion continued around the value of standardized project processes and tools as well as the value of improved quality and projects completed on time and on budget. One such example taken from the 2015 PMI study, Pulse of the Profession, outlined the benefits to employers: “Employers benefit as well – When more than one third of their project managers are PMP certified, organizations complete more of their projects on time, on budget, and meeting original goals”. An important step to support the business case is to obtain the existing data on the critical metrics for their organization. Comparing projects that have leveraged PMP certified project managers and processes to others will justify the need for resources required to implement a program supporting professional development aligned with PMP certification. A number of attending project professionals have already completed the preparatory courses. Others have recently become PMP certified and are excited to be part of the PMI community. The key takeaways for the CAMH audience are the benefits of PMP certification and information on how to obtain and maintain a certification. These include the many networking and volunteering opportunities in our growing PMI community. Feedback from the EPMO confirmed the success of the event in follow-up communications thanking Farrah and Azim for their presentation. We certainly look forward to welcoming new members to our community and helping professionals obtain their certification so that they can also benefit from their PMP and a PMI-SOC membership.
