Title: SCRUM – What about it and how can we make it work for us? - Understanding Agile values and principles and how Scrum fits into the Agile movement. Recognizing what “doing” Scrum means and what changes are required in an organization for a successful implementation of the framework.
Synopsis:
Agile is not a methodology. The Agile movement is a response to the failure of the dominant software development project management paradigms (including waterfall) and borrows many principles from lean manufacturing. It seeks alternatives to traditional project management. Agile approaches help teams respond to unpredictability through incremental, iterative work cadences and empirical feedback.
Agile is a mindset, a set of values and principles. It is a new way of working to realize business value sooner. “Being Agile” and “doing Agile” are two different concepts.
Scrum is part of the agile movement. How does Scrum fit into Agile? The Agile Manifesto doesn’t provide concrete steps. Organizations usually seek more specific methods to adopting a product delivery framework.
Scrum is an empirical framework for learning. Scrum is the most popular way of introducing agile frameworks due to its simplicity and flexibility. Because of this popularity, many organizations claim to be “doing Scrum” but aren’t doing anything close to it.
Scrum is a management framework for incremental product development using one or more cross-functional, self-organizing teams of 7 to 9 people each.
It provides a set of roles, responsibilities, meetings and artifacts that never change. Teams are responsible for creating and adapting their processes within this framework.
Scrum relies on the “inspect and adapt” feedback loops to cope with complexity and risk. It emphasizes decision making from real-world results rather than speculation. By removing unnecessary unpredictability, we’re better able to cope with the necessary unpredictability of continuous discovery and learning.
