Title: SCRUM: Artifacts, Metrics and their Application

Scrum Artifacts provide key information that the Scrum teams and the stakeholders need to be aware of for understanding the product under development, the activities done, and the activities being planned in the project. There is a minimum number of required artifacts in a scrum project which will be covered in this session, yet project artifacts are not limited to these.

What about metrics? How do we know that we are on track? What do we need to measure? In forecast based processes we needed a lot of metrics to tell us if we are still sticking to the plan.

The old adage “you can’t improve what you can’t measure” indicates the need to ”know how you know.” In traditional projects, milestones and key performance indicators (KPIs) measure project progress and individual contributions to that project.

But while Scrum defines several milestones—sprint planning, daily standup, sprint review, sprint retrospective, backlog grooming—the milestones alone don’t provide any guarantees of progress or success. However, each one allows team members to inspect and adapt how and what they work on.

So what should we measure? This session will provide you with a number of metrics that can be used to successfully track the progress on your Scrum project and help the teams continuously improve. This is not a comprehensive list though. Various Scrum Masters and Coaches utilize different metrics based on the circumstances and environments. Yet, some of these metrics are commonly used in all initiatives.

This session is a continuation of the May 2017 session on Scrum – “SCRUM –What about it and how can we make it work for us? Yet, be advised that this session will not cover, release planning, sprint planning, costs etc. The scope of this presentation is focused on artifacts, metrics and the way they are utilized for product development using a SCRUM framework.

Biography:

Alexandra is an experienced professional with more than 15 years extensive experience in Information Technology, 10 years' experience in Software Development and more than 6 years of experience in leading all phases of IT Projects using a mix of Waterfall and Agile frameworks. Alexandra started working as a Programmer Analyst and held various roles such as IT Internal Consultant, Project Coordinator, Project Manager and lately Scrum Master. 
Alexandra has a Master Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and a Bachelor of Mathematics and Computer Science degree from University of Waterloo. She has been a PMP since 2011. She is also a CSM, CAL1 and a Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS) Practitioner. 
Alexandra started volunteering with PMI-Toronto GTIS branch in June 2015 and is now the Portfolio Director for the Quarterly Workshop Events.
